The Problem:
The Dakota Access Pipeline has been in the news recently for many reasons. First, the pipeline is controversial because it cuts through disputed Sioux Tribe Reservation land, including an ancient burial site, and will run under the tribe's main water sources, the Missouri River and Lake Oahe. Second, the pipeline has become a political battle fought both at the Federal Government and in the Courts. Opponents of the pipeline believe that it poses a real danger to the drinking water for the Sioux Tribe and could cause major environmental impacts. Proponents of the pipeline believe that transporting oil through pipelines is the safest and most cost-effective way to transport oil.
The Task:
Students will look at the problems facing the Dakota access pipeline and decide what the best route for this pipeline is based on cost, sustainability, and environmental impact. They will create a scale drawing of their pipeline and defend their proposals through their 4 lenses.
The Problem:
How can we create a pipeline that is cost efficient, environmentally safe, and meets the wants and needs of the Sioux Tribe, environmentalists, government officials and the oil industry?
